Updating NodeJs
Who is this article for?Server administrators managing Please Review installations and considering NodeJs updates
Server access is required for these procedures
This guide explains the role of NodeJs in Please Review, how to update/upgrade it, and important considerations for different versions.
1. Purpose of NodeJs in Please Review
NodeJs has been included in the Redist folder with Please Review releases since version 6.4. Its primary purpose is to handle the import of existing Word tracked changes and comments into Please Review changes and comments. This component is crucial for importing these elements from Word documents.
2. Updating NodeJs
While Please Review includes a specific version of NodeJs, this component doesn't auto-update. Server administrators can manually update NodeJs if desired.
2.1. Update Procedure:
- Visit the official NodeJs website: https://nodejs.org/.
- Download the latest LTS (Long Term Support) version.
- Install the new version on your Please Review server.
Note: While the latest LTS version should work, you can check the NodeJs version included in the latest Please Review server release for reference.
2.2. Important Considerations:
- Schedule the update during a maintenance window to avoid interfering with ongoing document preparation processes.
- After updating, test the functionality by uploading a Word document with existing tracked changes and comments.
- Ensure Please Review is set to import such changes which is the default setting.
3. Other NodeJs Versions
You may notice another NodeJs version running on your server. This is likely associated with other components, such as PrizmDoc used in Please Review v6.x for handling PDF files.
3.1. Important Notes:
- Do not upgrade the NodeJs version associated with PrizmDoc, as compatibility is not guaranteed
- To identify different NodeJs instances:
- Open Task Manager.
- Enable the Command line column.
- Look for the full path to the NodeJs executable.
- To eliminate the need for the PrizmDoc associated NodeJs version:
- Upgrade to Please Review v7.x or higher.
- These versions no longer require PrizmDoc for PDF handling.
- After upgrading, you can uninstall PrizmDoc and its associated NodeJs version.
