Page Numbers In Reviews
Who is this article for? Please Review Review Owners/Participants trying to review Word documents
Being a review owner/participant will be required to follow these steps.
When reviewing Word documents, you may notice that page numbers in the headers and footers just appear as # signs. In some cases, you might also notice that new pages are not 100% lining up with where the new pages fall in the Word document
This article is split into the following sections:
- Page Numbers

1. Page Numbers
We display a # instead of page numbers intentionally. This a cosmetic difference and the page numbers will display just fine when the document is round tripped to download with comments.
The reason for this is that some aspects of Word documents, when rendered on the web in a HTML format, do not cope with the concept of pages well so we cannot always put new pages in the same places that they might appear in a Word document. This can be seen here, in the example of a table that spans multiple tables. Here you see it in Word:
Now, if we save that file as a web (HTML) format, or simply change from Print Layout to Web Layout, you see that a table that spans multiple pages in Word is simply just one big table in a web format:
The same is true for if a content control was filled out and this ended up spanning more than one page. This would flow without showing a new page.
Please Review attempts to put page breaks or new pages in the web version of the Word document but as it relies on various aspects of the HTML rendering engine for displaying Word documents, to display this efficiently, there will be these differences in how it appears on screen.
What we suggest, is the actual page number or layout of such items that are spanning pages like this is needed to be referenced, that the review be set to allow users to download the document. This is the default setting and participants with the review role would download a version of the document that is write protected, by default, to prevent them editing the document outside of the review in error.
A further alternative here is reviewing the document as a PDF. This is because we use a different rendering engine here and this pagination will not be impacted.
